Monday Song: “Be My Guest”

It’s always felt strangely scary for me to write a straight-up un-ironic love song, so I’ve decided to try to write a week of them in honor of Valentine’s Day (maybe next week I’ll write a week of president-themed songs in honor of Presidents Day?).

I don’t care what all your friends will say
I want to know you
They don’t understand the way I feel
They think I’m a bum from off the streets
Dirty and no good
Looking for a heart that’s ripe to steal

I don’t know, I guess you know the rest
If you want to talk, then baby be my guest

Your parents look at me like I want to
Blow my nose on their drapes
Something nasty that the cat dragged in
But I want to make you mine, oh mine
Babe, I’ll treat you right
You don’t know the places I have been

I don’t know, I guess you know the rest
If you want to talk, then baby be my guest

I am not filthy rich
I am not the king of Spain
I am just a boy
Who is standing in the rain

Let me know, or let me off the hook
I can’t wait no more
Baby, say you will, or set me free
All I want is just a little chance
To walk across the floor
That is all it is, so can’t you see?

I don’t know, I guess you know the rest
If you want to talk, then baby be my guest
